San Diego City College produces Newscene, a half-hour news show that broadcasts every Friday at 6:00 p.m. on ITV Channel 16 (Cox Cable).  As students in the Newscene program, we do it all:  shoot, produce and edit news packages, work behind-the-scenes in production (directing the show, technical directing, running cameras, audio), and so much more.

You can say Newscene is our training ground.  I enjoy working with my fellow classmates, instructors and technical professionals who help us create and deliver the best news product we can, given whatever limited resources we have.

Here’s a behind-the-scene look at Newscene, a 30-minute student-run TV news program which we produce at San Diego City College.  I shot this with Pure Digital’s Flip Ultra HD camcorder and edited the video with the latest version of iMovie.  Super easy!  I’m thinking we can turn the simple footage we shoot into a reality web series.  What do you think?

APTRA Reporter Camp

APTRA Academy 2009

APTRA Academy 2009

I’m so excited!  Three friends (Katie Anceravage, Steven Commer and Victoria Johnson) from my Newscene class and I are heading up to Calabasas for the APTRA Reporter Camp this weekend.  We’re driving up to Agoura Hills right after Newscene and taking a two-bedroom suite at Homewood Suites (a Hilton property) the night before the two-day camp.  The reporter camp will be in Calabasas at the Cottontail Ranch (Katie, Victoria and I are going to that one) and the anchor camp will be at Pepperdine University (Steven will go to that camp.)  I’m sure we all will learn a lot, make new friends and grow from the experience!

Fireworks in Santee

Fireworks in Santee

Your critiques would be greatly appreciated on this story on fireworks and budget constraints.  I already can see that I’ll have to tweak the b-roll audio so that it doesn’t drown out my voice over track.

I used the fabulous (and cheap) Flip Ultra HD camcorder, a QuikPod, a Marantz audio digital recorder, Sennheiser microphone and iMovie HD.  (I used my son’s Intel MacBook, which is a lot faster than my MacBook Pro G4…although I do prefer the editing ease of Final Cut Pro.)

Christine and Andrew Myette

Christine and Andrew Myette

Every Fourth of July, Coach Andrew Myette and his lovely wife, Christine, invite friends and family for dinner and a fireworks show in their backyard.  The City of Santee puts on this annual fireworks display for the Myettes and other Santee residents at the Town Center Community Park Ballfields.  There’s no doubt:  the Myettes have the “best seats in the house” and we’re so grateful to them for sharing the fireworks display with us.

Hearing that the Myettes had such great seats for the popular Santee event, about a dozen spectators camped out on the sidewalk outside of their backyard to enjoy the show.  (Andrew and Christine let them know that their property was a “smoke-free” zone, which perturbed two smoking “campers.”  Bravo for standing up for your property rights and right to breathe smoke-free air!)

I shot this video with a Flip Ultra HD camcorder and a QuikPod.  The show runs about 18 minutes.  Enjoy!

Hugging my son before our race

Hugging my son before our race

I signed my family up to run in the inaugural Seattle Rock-n-Roll Marathon some six months ago (December 2008) and we now I’m happy to say that we’re finished our respective races!

Sometimes, when you sign up for a race six months out, you can’t predict how life will progress in the ensuing months.   I would never have imagined that Chris would move out on his 18th birthday.  I didn’t plan on gaining 10 lbs. half a year later.

My husband, Eric, was probably the most diligent person training for this marathon in our family.  The day he decided to commit himself to training for the Seattle RnR six months ago was the start of something wonderful!  Despite the trials we faced with Chris’s health and his desire to live on his own, Eric maintained a consistent training schedule with me and on his own.  Chris’s training was not as consistent as it should have been, but he  had a lot of base training from is time running with our high school’s cross country and track teams.  Chris finished in 3:30:28, a little over 20 minutes away from qualifying for the Boston Marathon and 18th in his age division.

I’ll add more details about the race when I can.  Stay tuned!

We’re six days away from running our marathon!  Besides being a “rest day” from training, it’s also the Sabbath day for us.  So I’m giving a talk in church today about fathers.  Our church’s bishopric asked me to speak about my husband as a father.  Eric is a wonderful provider:  temporally, emotionally and spiritually.  I’ve contemplated on how patient and loving he is when it came to raising our son (who recently moved out of our home when he turned 18.)

Here’s a video provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons).  For us LDS members, family is everything.  Both my parents are in Heaven, but, nevertheless, we believe that we are connected to them and our ancestors for eternity.

To my dear husband, Eric, and to all fathers out there, Happy Father’s Day!
